Bernard Tomic | Australian Open 2009

Bernard TomicBernard Tomic’s first professional tournament ended in the second round of the Australian Open 2009 at the hands of the big serving Gilles Muller of Luxembourg 6-4 1-6 2-6 3-6. Tomic reached the second round by defeating world #73 Potito Starace of Italy in the first round.

It was a wonderful start for a lad of only 16. He kinda reminded me of a pimply Rafael Nadal who made his professional debut at 17. I just hope he bulks up as well and start pounding balls with more authority. He clearly has the talent; he was last year’s boys’ singles champion at the Australian Open after all.

I wasn’t able to watch the first set of his match against Muller, but it’s clear from watching the rest of the match that he clearly needs more experience dealing with the big serving men of the professional tour. He has the build to really make an impact down the road. Clearly a kid to watch out for in the coming years.
