Federer Wins Mutua Madrilena Madrid Open 2009

Phew! For a few weeks there I thought Roger Federer was done for. His girlfriend, now wife, is pregnant and everything seems to be perfectly fine in his own little world. I have already forgotten that crying episode when Nadal beat him in the Australian Open Finals and I seem to have forgotten tennis altogether when more than four months have passed and he still hasn’t won a single event.

But all that has changed in Madrid. Roger has beaten Rafael Nadal no less and in his own country, in front of thousands of Spaniards. Can that win be any sweeter than that? Moreover, it was the tournament directly preceding the French Open 2009. That one tough Grand Slam event that Roger has yet to win. I wouldn’t blame Roger if his self-confidence is higher than a kite.

But Roger being Roger, he wouldn’t want to get carried away and predict that he’ll win the French Open now for sure. And that’s what he said too.

On the distaff side, Dinara Safina beat Caroline Wozniacki to win the Championship.
