iPhone OS 3.0 | Should You Be Excited?

[ad#link]iPhone OS 3.0Well, it depends.  Do you currently own an iPhone 3G?  If not are you thinking of buying one?

So Apple’s big announcement of the iPhone OS 3.0 came and went.  There were no discussions about a new iPhone hardware coming soon, just a software driven upgrade to the iPhone they call iPhone OS 3.0.  Some would argue that these features should have been present in the iPhone right from the start.  Clearly these protesters are not familiar with planned obsolescence or anything resembling that.  Just a heads up, just like savvy investors who would not put all their eggs in one basket, manufacturers of anything also plan upgrades right from the start.  These upgrades are then spread over time to ensure steady sales.  How else will they entice folks to keep buying their products?  Honestly.

I will not discuss each of the enhancements that iPhone 3.0 brings.  I leave articles like this, or this to deal with it.  Suffice it to say that these are the features that we can expect once iPhone OS 3.0 is upon us—this summer.  What?  We still have to wait that long?  Yes dears, we have to wait.

I see this one as a two-pronged strategy by Apple.  The first one is for developers to test these new features out.  This way, some kinks that may have escaped the eyes of Apple’s own developers are caught before they’re out of beta.  If you’re a developer you can already download iPhone 3.0 here Apple Dev Home.

Another not so good news but relatively ok, is that there are some features of the iPhone 3.0 that are not available to first generation iPhone holders, specifically the Stereo Bluetooth A2DP Audio and MMS features due to Bluetooth spec/cell radio used  respectively.  Still, overall it’s a pretty sweet upgrade.

There are certain features that people were expecting Apple to announce as well but these were carefully left out, skirted around, or plain ignored.  Like video recording and sharing.  There were also no talks about an upgrade of the iPhone’s 2 megapixel camera.  With current smartphones sporting huge camera MPs, this is something that Apple has to play catch-up on.

Could it be that….??

Yes, I think this is the second reason why the iPhone 3.0 is only available in the summer.  We can almost expect a new iPhone hardware that will coincide with the launch of the iPhone OS 3.0–  one that already sports iPhone OS 3.0 plus the other left out features.

Leaving out a few useful features would ensure that when Apple introuduces to the market the new iPhone hardware, people would bite, which is a smart (but not totally unexpected) move by the way, otherwise, there won’t be any differentiation between the new hardware and the existing iPhone 3G.

Now we’re talking about a couple of months here when the iPhone 3.0 (and a new iPhone???) is released.  For those itching to get their hands dirty with an iPhone 3G, are those left-out features worth your wait?  Or are you going to just go ahead get the iPhone 3G now and then upgrade it in the summer with the iPhone 3.0.

Oh I missed out a very important detail.  Did I tell you that the iPhone 3.0 software upgrade is free?
