Here’s an interesting tidbit. Apparently kids in the UK(?) are spending as much as 31 hours a week online. That’s like a full time job! Internet marketers are gonna love this info though, I could already hear them licking their chops at the prospect of including these kids’ emails in their mailing list; if they haven’t done so already. Personally I think this is sad. There’s nothing wrong with kids being tech savvy at such a young age but for them to spend almost all their free time by themselves or communicating virtually with their friends, I believe their missing out a lot of their childhood. Even in not so rich countries like the Philippines, I can see the more affluent kids spending more of their time tinkering with their PSPs or Playstations rather than playing in their backyard with other kids.
I remember when I was young and the only kind of enjoyment a kid has in mind is playing tumbang-preso or tag with other kids of the neighbourhood. We would then gather the best players in these kiddie games in our area to challenge other neighbourhood kids in their own turf. There was no lack of interpersonal interaction then, and better still we get to excercise a lot. Something that can’t be said about kids these days.
Maybe it’s a generational gap. Maybe if we were also born during these times, we’d probably be shacked up in some dimly lit room somewhere fussing over our Facebook accounts and chatting in predator infested chatrooms until our fingers bled. But still I think parents should at least encourage their kids to go out more; schedule some picnic or family outing just to get them to break their dependency on technology once in a while and have some offline fun. That should do wonders to family bonding too.

I strongly agree with that. When we have kids at the house, we need to put some "filter" in our internet so the porn site will not be acess by kids accidentally.
Kids are addicted to tech communication. They have to have unlimited text on their cell phone plans. They have to have cable tv and internet in their bedrooms. I notice though that their social IQ is paying the price. The side affect are superficial friendships, casual sex being the norm and dependence on parents into adulthood. I think adults trying to give their kids what they never had does not give them a fighting chance. It is up to the parents to set tech time limits until they are able to balance their own lives.
Hi Nikshufrey/Tamara, I agree with you guys and have you seen that tv show To Catch A Predator? My gosh, scary! I hope parents will accompany their kids to watch it so at least they’ll have an idea how dangerous the internet can be.
I average about 50 hours a week. I know I’m not a kid anymore so that’s pretty much acceptable, hehe..

Hi, Danke für Deinen Beitrag “Kids’ Online Habits”! Schreib weiter so…! Gefällt mir sehr gut!
It's really alarming how much time kids spend online these days!I hope parents are aware of their children's activities-pedos are everywhere just waiting for a chance to take advantage of their innocence.Maybe putting the computer in an open area in full view of parents will help.
31 hours! My god. I don't even spend that much online and I work evening where I surf the net when its slow! I can't imagine my children surfing that many hours!
But we can't tell if this has got a bad or good effect yet on em'…not until like 21 years time….but i think technology has come to stay…& d kids are still having their fun "even with the so called chat rooms, playstations etc"….every generation with its own peculiarity!
