PS3 | Blu-ray Disc Developments

Posted on 25 January 2009

Two separate news that could affect the fate of PS3 owners/gamers and BD (Blu-ray Disc) enthusiasts caught my eye today. These are actually 2-day old news (does that make them old news?) but since their impact will only be felt in the future, I feel these news are still relevant even with the little delay. At least for those who care anyway.

The first one has something to do with Sony opening up a BD factory in China. Although the report is focused entirely on the release of BD movies, how far behind can BD games be? It is a very welcome news however although a bit worrisome for some folks.

For one, with manufacturing of BDs moved to China, hopefully (crossing my fingers) BD movie and game prices would be much lower in the future, if not altogether nosedive. A lower labor cost should do that to any product. As to quality, well, I do hope that it is retained. On the worrisome end, we’re talking about China here of course. Sooner or later a lot of these things can get copied and with technology already there, hmm… we could all just speculate what would happen.

Another news (if you can call it that) that caught my eye involved a video of a PS2 game being played in a PS3 console A PS3 40Gb service console to be exact. There’s a big difference between the service console variety and the unit that’s being sold off retail stores. If rumors were to be believed, Sony is actually working on a software emulator that would allow this feature incorporated in all PS3 consoles. Again it’s only a rumor. But if it’s true, then I say that backward compatibility thing is a couple of years too late. Still, we’ll take what we can get.

Lowered BD prices, backward compatibility for the PS3? Looks like Christmas may come early this year, i.e. if these news materializes of course.

Blu-Ray discs cost an average of $30 here in the US. Hopefully, the price will start coming down once their manufacturing’s moved to China. I just bought a Blu-Ray player over the holidays and I must say that the effect is AWESOME! :)

Software PS2 compatibility was in the 80Gig consoles (last one being the MGS4 bundles). Everyone that wanted PS2 backward compatibility had a long time to upgrade.

Also, the China factory was for Europe, Russia, and China mostly. It probably won’t affect prices in the US as much as you think.

  9. I’m not a fan of blueray, didn’t like how HD DVD got killed. They would have been much cheaper.

  11. Very true guys…it is about time we are not seeing in fall in prices. I have been waiting from long time to buy blu ray player and price doesn't seem to be in favor to me.

  12. rsrare says:

Glad HD DVD vs Blueray is finally over, we need one format.
    Thanks for the article.

  13. Would the HD really have been cheaper than the Blu-ray? Where's the evidence for this the blogger source (not saying you're wrong, just wonder how you come to this conclusion). Surely teh Blu-ray will make things a lot more difficult for pirating though?

Blu ray is the way to go. Look at how much the prices have come down even since this original post. I think Blu ray players are going to be a huge gift this winter. You can get a great player for around 150 bucks and now the ps3 is only $299.

I too hope the chinese will get to cranking out those blu-ray movies. With the labor only costing about 2 dollars an hour these blu-ray movies should really come down in cost.
